I've been reading Nina Garcia's Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion, and let me tell you, its Fabulous. I have been a fan of hers since I started reading Marie Claire (she's the fashion editor there). She is also a host on Project Runway. And she's Colombian. Anyhoo...I was excited and surprised to see that the first section of the Look Book talks about attire while at Work: Interviews, first day on Job, Tuesdays, Casual Fridays, etc. Then I thought to myself, great, I'm not crazy! Since I started working at this job a little over two years ago, I have been come to known as the Fashionista of our group. Even our CEO (hip to Project Runway) compliments me almost daily on my choice of attire. Of course I like these compliments, I'm a Leo...but, that isn't why I dress up.
I dress up because I want my superiors to take me seriously. We don't work in the Fashion Industry, but we do work with Professionals and our members are Prominent people in their field of study and we do advocate on the Hill from time to time. There are three people that I can think of in my life who have great sense of work fashion: My mom, My dad, and My cousin, Allison. These three dress flawless. They really do. My mom is super conservative with her attire, but nevertheless, she has a Look, and it works well for her, and apparently everyone else, because she is never without compliments. My dad also dresses VERY well for a guy. Really. And he picks out his own stuff! Neck Ties, Cuff Links, Button Downs...real GQ kinda fella. My cousin, Allison, well she just does the damn thing every time. Now, none of these three, to my knowledge, shop with personal shoppers or fly items in off the runway in Paris...but what they have is their own Style. They do not, and I REPEAT, do NOT follow trends. They stick with what works. And voila, it works for them, and I'm guessing will work for the rest of us too.
A few tips from the Look Book:
- Be Pulled Together and Polished
- Neat, Relevant and Modern
- Keep loud jewelry, make-up to a minimum
- Be-friend a tailor. Seriously.
- Heels higher than 3 in., probably not work appropriate
- Be confident and stand tall
- Iron, Iron, Iron or for Pete's sake use Downy Wrinkle Release Spray
" The basic elements of any businesswoman's wardrobe should rely in this trio: simple casual suits, tailored dresses, and good separates." ~ Edith Head
" Clothes can suggest, persuade, connote, insinuate, indeed lie, and apply subtle pressure while their wearer is speaking frankly and straightforwardly of other matters." ~ Anne Hollander
Toodles!
