Fashion...or Fired.

So,

I've been reading Nina Garcia's Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion, and let me tell you, its Fabulous. I have been a fan of hers since I started reading Marie Claire (she's the fashion editor there). She is also a host on Project Runway. And she's Colombian. Anyhoo...I was excited and surprised to see that the first section of the Look Book talks about attire while at Work: Interviews, first day on Job, Tuesdays, Casual Fridays, etc.  Then I thought to myself, great, I'm not crazy! Since I started working at this job a little over two years ago, I have been come to known as the Fashionista of our group. Even our CEO (hip to Project Runway) compliments me almost daily on my choice of attire. Of course I like these compliments, I'm a Leo...but, that isn't why I dress up.

I dress up because I want my superiors to take me seriously. We don't work in the Fashion Industry, but we do work with Professionals and our members are Prominent people in their field of study and we do advocate on the Hill from time to time. There are three people that I can think of in my life who have great sense of work fashion: My mom, My dad, and My cousin, Allison. These three dress flawless. They really do. My mom is super conservative with her attire, but nevertheless, she has a Look, and it works well for her, and apparently everyone else, because she is never without compliments. My dad also dresses VERY well for a guy. Really. And he picks out his own stuff! Neck Ties, Cuff Links, Button Downs...real GQ kinda fella. My cousin, Allison, well she just does the damn thing every time. Now, none of these three, to my knowledge, shop with personal shoppers or fly items in off the runway in Paris...but what they have is their own Style. They do not, and I REPEAT, do NOT follow trends. They stick with what works. And voila, it works for them, and I'm guessing will work for the rest of us too.

A few tips from the Look Book:
  • Be Pulled Together and Polished
  • Neat, Relevant and Modern
  • Keep loud jewelry, make-up to a minimum
  • Be-friend a tailor. Seriously.
  • Heels higher than 3 in., probably not work appropriate
  • Be confident and stand tall
  • Iron, Iron, Iron or for Pete's sake use Downy Wrinkle Release Spray
I'm pretty sure my mom, dad and cousin have mastered these rules and may have a few of their own. I'll check.

" The basic elements of any businesswoman's wardrobe should rely in this trio: simple casual suits, tailored dresses, and good separates." ~ Edith Head

" Clothes can suggest, persuade, connote, insinuate, indeed lie, and apply subtle pressure while their wearer is speaking frankly and straightforwardly of other matters." ~ Anne Hollander

Happy Birthday Daddy...

Tomorrow, September 28th, is my daddy's birthday. And how many ways do I love my father? I honestly can't count. He is the REASON. I will just leave it at that. He knows when to give tough love and when to be tender. He knows when to back off and when to intervene. He knows when to give his shoulder to cry on, or when to tell a much needed joke. Most of all, he is there when you need him to be there. Even when you don't deserve him to be. Daddy, I hope you enjoy your day. I love you.

To Pull...or Not Pull.

So,

Zavy has a shaky tooth. This will be the 3rd baby tooth he will lose. To be specific, he is losing one of his top incisors. Now, this tooth has been shaky for some time. Almost 4 weeks. Last night, he was getting irritated after he bit into an apple and apparently it hurt him soooo bad, he decided to go to the bathroom and try to pull the tooth out himself. Not wise. The little guy almost sent himself to the ER. I heard this piercing shriek downstairs and so I JUMPED down my stairs to see what was happening. When I arrived, he calmly said, Mom, I am trying to take my tooth out.

So, I decided to try and help him. To No Avail. I pulled as hard as I could (not really hard at all)...I saw tears welling up in his eyes (or maybe they were welling in mine) and I decided, I'm  just going to let nature do its course and leave the tooth alone. Good choice. He's happy. I'm happy. The tooth is happy (this, I'm sure of).

Flower Power!

For the first time since a week ago, I watched a little TV today. Exactly. That should tell you how my week went. Anyways, the first thing I saw was the end of Bed of Roses...and OMG! I love that movie. "You're supposed to say, Wait, Don't Go...Everything is going to be all right." I just LOVE CHRISTIAN SLATER. I digress. The next movie I saw was Love Happens, a very cute movie starring Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aninston, about a self help guru getting over the loss of a loved one, because he suffered that himself. And yes, Aninston is the female lead, and yes, they...well, I will spoil the movie if you haven't seen it so its up to you if you want to keep on reading. They fall in love. What intrigued me about this movie is that Jennifer's character owns a flower shop. FLOWERS. How important they are...

I've always loved receiving flowers. Don't they just brighten up your day? Your mood? Your office, home, whatever! Flowers are a Universal sign for "Someone is thinking of you" It doesn't matter who it is...when you receive flowers, you instantly feel...Happy (even if its from crazy stalker exes or an apology for getting you fired, maybe). Some people have favorites: Roses, Lilies, Tulips, Carnations (death to Charlotte York
:-0), or Orchids. Personally, I love Peach and Lilac Roses. But I would never turn down flowers. I think, if I had the ability to do so, I would love to own and operate a flower shop.

Really. Think about it. I'm happy being around flowers...and I'm happy seeing other people happy. Just imagine how wonderful it would be to see someone come in YOUR shop and pick out a lovely bouquet or arrangement to send to someone they love, like, crushing on, celebrating...or even sympathy or I'm sorry flowers.

Maybe it's still possible? I mean, I'm ONLY 30 years of age...its not like I'm...well, I won't say any particular age as to offend anyone, but you know :-) Perhaps when Zavy goes off to college, or if I win the Mega-Million (be aware that this is the first of a million times I will mention winning the Mega-Millions in this blog), or if I marry rich...a girl can dream.

Until then, let's all enjoy the lovely arrangement I have provided for your enjoyment.

Wait, is it unusual that I have received more flowers as a single woman, whose not actively dating, than I did when I was married??? Hmmm...

BTW, Zavy thinks flowers are messy. He'll learn their importance soon enough, or God bless his little heart!

Victoria Secret Models don't eat Pizza for Breakfast...

...but they should. Why? It's delicious. I woke up intending to have a  lazy Saturday, and so far, so good. I decided that I didn't want to make anything for breakfast. I searched through the contents of my fridge, and found Pizza from Mama Lucia's...Ding Ding Ding, JACKPOT. Of course, I prepared a very hearty breakfast for Zavy consisting of a toasted mini whole wheat bagel with grape jelly, 3 slices of turkey bacon, 2 slices of sharp cheddar cheese and a bottle of Odwalla Apple Juice. Me? PIZZA! One WHOLE slice of cheese pizza. And it was delicious. And I'm satisfied, and Happy. Who cares if I had half of my day's worth of calories for breakfast? It's Saturday...live a little.

We are slowly getting dressed to go see Alpha and Omega...then to a birthday party. I think this day is going to be rather close to perfect, if the remainder of the days meals consists of Popcorn and birthday cake...

We don't Pull Flags in Football...

Well,

Zavy's second football game was a little better than the first, but not by much. These little boys. I have to give it to them. SMART. They cannot see why they can't tackle...and they really hate the idea of pulling flags! In my opinion, I thinks its retarded too. What's the point of playing football if you can't tackle??? I honestly think they should start the league at Ankle or Peewee, where there are helmets and tackling involved. But, that's just my Opinion. Another thing...these boys are interested in everything else on the field, but pulling flags! "Look Mom, a grasshopper!" "Is that a Helicopter?" "Hey Mom, can I play my DSi tonight?" There are no limits to what their minds are thinking out there.

I volunteered in the snack shack tonight so I didn't get to see him play, but I know he tried his hardest. They all do. The snack shack was OK...We didn't have Pizza, so that was a bust. But, we did have burgers, hot dogs, popcorn, pretzels and nachos. However, everyone wanted Pizza. You can't win them all. Well, at least I have fulfilled my volunteer obligations (we have to volunteer for a field, coaching, or snack shack position, or pay a $50 opt out fee). It wasn't too bad.

So, its Friday Night and we are home. Zavy downstairs doing something...and me upstairs,
flipping through the latest Cosmopolitan Magazine, with my girl Lauren Conrad on the Cover. I've always loved LC from Laguna Beach. I'm so happy she kept her head straight and focused on her career, instead of her celebrity status.

It's about time...

So,

I'm back with a brand new blog...and a new job, and a new house...but the same old weight, allergies/asthma issues, and same Fabulous broke-ness. Grammer Nazis, don't even start. But this time, something is different. What's different is that I am a different person. I am divorced, I co-parent my six year old with my ex-husband and this is successful, and I turned 30 on August 2nd. I also, for the first time in my working career, seem like I actually have a career. Yep, I'm in Benefits and Payroll, still at the same company, but different department, and I love it. LOVE IT! I am learning all these new things and I'm busy, most of the time, but it was a change I needed.

Zavy is six now and in 1st grade. The transition to first grade went way more smoothly than the transition from pre-k to kindergarten (I still get nightmares thinking of that!). There were days I wanted to punch Zavy, the teacher, the principal and Zavy's dad...I didn't however, want to punch myself, because I just KNEW everything I was doing was right :-) But, we got over it. Or at least they all did...I was still upset on his last day of kindergarten, that it didn't go as smoothly as I had imagined it would be. Oh well...

He is also in flag football...And, well...hmmmm. Let's just say he is a little surprised its not tackle football like he see's on TV on Sundays. Hopefully he sticks with it. I can't force him, I won't actually...because if he doesn't want to do it, that means I save on gas money each week...selfish? Nope...just being practical. And I get 6 more hours to do REAL stuff during the week!

Me, I'm single...yes. I have been dating, it has been interesting...to be continued.

I hope to get on with blogging at least 3x a week, actually...I have too. I have been asked to blog for Working Mother Magazine, which would be great, since I have been reading their magazine since I've been a "working mom" (2005 and on). Now, that would be intersting!

Toodles...

P.S. I still LOVE LOVE LOVE FASHION! And SEX AND THE CITY! AND CHOCOLATE!
